Subject: [*] AD Module Bungee Submission
In keeping with the serious professional nature of this forum, I submit
the BUNGEE After Dark module, downloaded from the Washington Apple Pi
bulletin board. Following is from the README:
Al Bloom, Virginia Tech
No, I'm not the author
Bungee is a screen saver that depicts exactly what would happen if a
bungee jumper's cord suddenly snapped. Settings can be made to see a
man jump. When the cord breaks he falls to the ground with a grotesque
splat. You can also choose to see a cow jumping. When the cow hits
the ground it turns into a pile of steaks, hamburgers and sausages.
Another setting allows you to see what would happen if the cord didn't
snap but the man did instead. Of course for those that don't like the
blood and gore, a successful option is available where the jumper just
bounces on the cord.
Bungee requires After Dark 2.0u (or greater) for the Macintosh and
System 7 (or System 6 with 32 bit quickdraw) to run.
Bungee is shareware: $3.00 to Midnight Software.

Cam v1.1Demo
Cam Analysis and Visualization
By: Hussam Dandashli
Purdue University
This is a demo version of Cam1.1 . It does analysis and animation of a cam
with
a follower. It is
limited to the cam presets where the user can change them but can't save them
as
an input file, or
open an existing input file.
The analysis is limited to displacements only. A sample output file is
included
to show the
numerical output given by the original version. (see the user manual for more
information)
The only system requirement is to have color QuickDraw (8 bit or 32 bit). This
demo is a non-
FPU version which will be a little slow. The full version will be a FPU
version
(unless requested
otherwise).
People most likely to benefit from it are undergraduate students (Design I
level) and educators
for a class demo.
I would like this application to be included on the archive CD-ROM.

Subject: [*] gradebook 1.4
Here is the latest shareware release of The Gradebook Stack v1.4
Features:
* Define your own grading system and grading scale
* Handles letter grades, numerical grades (25/30), or "Check-Plus-Minus"
* Calculates averages, tracks attendance, prints reports for you
and your students
* Built-in Help and friendly interface make it easy to learn & use
* Shareware, $15
** v1.4
- no longer treats space as 0 on grading prefs card. You must use numbers.
- changed meaning of "X" score, added "M" score. Now, if you give a student
a student a "M" (missing), it is counted as a 0 for averaging purposes, and
appears on the list of missing assignments for that student. If you give a
"X", the score will be thrown out before averages are calculated, and will
not appear in the missing scores list. This gives you a way to excuse
students from certain assignments.
- printed manual is available to registered users for $5

Jotto Deluxe is a word game based on logic and frustration.
The computer will pick a six-letter word from a 2800+ word
database, and you have 15 tries to guess it. You will get
feedback on how many letters in your guess are in the actual
word, but beware: each guess must be a valid six-letter word,
or you will not get any feedback about it at all.
Jotto Deluxe is free; there is no shareware fee. It supports color,
grayscale, and B/W monitors and works under system 6 or 7.
(For technical reasons, sounds may require system 6.0.7 or later.)

Subject: [*] JPEGView 3.0
Announcing the release of JPEGView 3.0 -- September 1, 1993
Enclosed is version 3.0 of my postcardware application JPEGView, a fast,
flexible JPEG, PICT, and GIF viewer for the Macintosh. This latest release
adds a number of substantial new features, including full AppleScript support,
new high-quality dithering routines, a greatly improved slide show, floating
windows, and much much more!
IMPORTANT NOTE: JPEGView *requires* System 7.0 or later *and* any version of
QuickTime to run. The latest version of the QuickTime extension (1.6.1)
can be found via anonymous FTP at ftp.apple.com in the
/dts/mac/sys.soft/quicktime directory.
Briefly, here are the important new features in version 3.0:
- full AppleEvent support, allowing scripting and recording with AppleScript
- new dithering routines for better image quality on displays with
at least 256 colors
- floating windows showing image statistics, colors, and comments
- vastly improved slide show functionality, including offscreen rendering
- extensions to QuickTime to allow the display of JPEG/JFIF thumbnail images
- support for creating custom icons when saving images
- more time given to background applications during image decompression
- looser restrictions on full-screen images, allowing selections to be made
- better balloon help and freshly-updated on-line help
- many, many other minor user interface improvements
And a general JPEGView overview:
- it's free (well, postcardware), simple, and easy to use
- requires only 600k, but will effectively use more memory to run faster
- produces some of the highest-quality images available on the Macintosh
- provides an excellent user-configurable slide show
- automatically scales images to fit on your monitor
- has handy full screen windows (without the menubar) for large images
- supports multiple-monitor systems extremely well
- includes exhaustive on-line documentation and balloon help
- is System 7-studly, featuring full AppleScript support and 32-bit
cleanliness
- comes with a cool colorful JPEG test image :-)
Once again:
JPEGView is postcardware. The concept is simple:
If you like it, you are obligated to send me a postcard of some sort.
If you want a printed, bound manual and official release disk, register by
sending in US$20.
Full details are available from the on-line help (in the help (aka
"Balloon") menu).
Enjoy!

Subject: 1200dpi PICTs
>From Pindar user Ian McCallSubject: _1200dpi PICTs
Hello.
Does anyone know of any utility that will open a 1200dpi PICT file
and save it in TIFF?
I'll give the background to this problem in case anyone can think of
a better way of doing things than I have so far. I work for a company
that needs to produce a Framemaker document containing TeX output at
1200dpi.
Now, although TeX uses outline fonts it needs them to be generated at
specific point sizes (effectively bitmaps, really). So in order to
get the output, I've managed to get TeX to generate 1200dpi fonts
from its outlines and then used Print2Pict, which produces a 1200dpi
PICT file. The idea is that we would then convert the PICT to a TIFF
and then include the TIFF in the Framemaker document.
Originally I planned to use Photoshop, but this tells me I've run out
of scratch-disk space. This is absurd - it has 430megs allocated and
the file I'm trying to open is 220k. So then I thought maybe
GifConverter, but GifConverter first converts the PICT to 72dpi. I've
just finished trying GraphicsConverter, but that tells me there's an
error in the PICT file. There isn't - even TeachText will open it.
It's just that everything that's opened it so far has treated it as
72dpi. I know that Photoshop can handle PICTs greater than 72dpi, but
I've yet to find anything else.
Can someone help me convert? Or is there some Print2Tiff driver
lurking somewhere? Anyone??!!
Cheers,
Ian

There is a commercial product called Multiclip (from Olduvai) that can be
obtained from most mail order companies. It allows multiple clipboards and
you can "paste the whole lot" by using the "sequential paste " option (after
re-sequencing the order, should you wish). You might want to give it a try.

Subject: Hard Disk Icon Trouble (Q)
If I'd paid attention when this was discussed before I wouldn't be writing
this message now...
I accidentally installed a custom icon on the system partition of my
internal hard disk. So I made it visible with MacTools and trashed it.
Unfortunately, rather than revert to the icon that my disk formatter put
there (I/O Utilities) my Mac puts up the generic file icon as the hard disk
icon (or more accurately, I guess, the volume icon). The usual GetInfo
cutting and pasting doesn't work (System 7.1) but the I/O tech support guy
says that their icon is still there, it just isn't being found. Using
CustomIconKiller didn't help either.
So the question is: how do I get the original icon back, short of
reformatting the volume partition?
Thanks in advance for any help.

This is really a question you should ask of your VAX sysadmin, but
I can tell you what I do in that situation:
One way around disk limitations is to use the scratch space on your VAX.
For example, assuming your system is running Unix, there is probably
a directory called /usr/tmp or just /tmp, which any user can write to,
and which is not counted against your disk quota.
To use it, you would 'cd /usr/tmp', ftp the file from Apple as usual,
and then download it at once.
One major drawback about saving files in scratch space is that the system
will tend to delete all files there, every day or so; however, this
wouldn't stop you from doing a quick download. Also, the amount of
scratch space available is not infinite, so you might want to do a
'df /usr/tmp' beforehand to see how much space is free. And don't
forget to delete the file after you have downloaded it, so as not to
waste space.
If you are running VMS, then you should just ask the sysadmin, as none
of this advice will work.

Dear Netters:
In IM v11 #173 achebonk@phibred.com complains that his SE

If that is an internal HD it is possible that the speaker wire
is disconnected.
You probably had to remove the motherboard (or at least move
it) to get in there. Those SE's are packed pretty tight! It
is necessary to detatch the speaker wire from the motherboard
to do this.
I'd take another look at the instalation manual and check
inside to see if you have a long dangling wire leading to your
speaker.
Hope that helps,
Dan

Many people have suggested this:
1) Open the system suitcase.
2) Locate the keyboards and mark them.
3) Drag the keyboards out of the system suitcase.
4) Trash 'em!
Well, I already have trouble with step 2:
I can find no keyboards in the system suitcase.
Someone else told me that the US keyboard might be required by the system.
and thus does not show up.
Well, that still leaves the German keyboard to be shown. But - no way.
Even if I assume that my system got so used to the German layout that it
won't give it away that easily - there's a whole lot of keyboards more
in the system of my IIvx that at least one of them could have the decency
to show up.
Maybe they're still drawing sticks.

Pretty amazing price for what you are getting isn't it. And all of

Disk Copy has a menu option to save the disk image, which can be used to

Subject: Macs---to leave on, or not to leave on (Q)
I've read (here, in fact, I believe) that it's not a bad idea to leave
one's Mac on all the time because powering it up each time stresses its
circuits. But in the Oct93 Macworld [p.139], Jim Heid states, ``Leaving
a Mac on 24 hours a day ... shortens a hard drive's life.'' Hmm ... that
sort of puts me between a rock and a hard place, it seems: switching my
Mac off/on each day is good for the hard drive, but not so good for the
circuits; leaving it on 24 hours is good for the circuits, but not so
good for the hard drive. My question is, What's my best strategy?
To leave my Mac on all the time, or not? (Presently, I leave my Mac on
24 hours, but switch off the (external) monitor at night.) Thanks.

You can get a version of SPICE for the Mac. It's called MicroCap and it
provides a gui to the SPICE solvers. Unfortunately, the developer
(Spectrum Software) doesn't really believe in Macs. The DOS version is up
to 3 or 4. Macs get to use version 2. Which doesn't even comprehend the
idea of system 7 print drivers (and as a result, I have a system 6 folder
on my HD and System Picker to switch between them:-{). All in all, a
pretty sorry scene.
Which brings me to another point, if I may: Why is it that we don't see
stuff like this developed for the Mac? The machine has great capabilities
(IMHO), which certainly don't need to be expounded upon here.
I've been corresponding with the sysop of the BBS run by the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) - he's looking toward IP access down
the road - and he really bemoans the lack of stuff on his BBS for macs. Why
is this? We have some great stuff - LabVIEW (ok now Windoze and Sun Sparc
can do it too) and Igor are two biggies which come to mind. Yet a quick
look thru Mechanical Engineer (ASME Monthly) or Scientific Computing and
Automation would have you believe that the Mac was never introduced 9+
years ago!

emacs: X server unable to find requested font `Rom14.500'.
I have gone into fonts (command-F) and clicked on the

The font exists on my unix box as a pcf file:
Rom14.iso1.pcf.Z through Rom14.iso9.pcf.Z skipping only iso6 and

Anyone know how to get that font to the mac?

Subject: Magic Modems
Hello!
I am in the market for one of those there 14.4 wonder-modems. (ok, not all
that wonderful, but not shabby modems, hows that?) Anyway, I've narrowed
it down to three suspects:
1. SupraFaxModem 14.4 I've worked with Supras before, they are
nice, they work good, and I like the cute lil numerical display.
2. USRobotics Sports Faxter (Or whatever that cute lil apellation
is...) I've got a friend with one of these, happy as a clam
with it, so no problem there.
3. MacProducts Magic VFX 14.4 modem, complete with the latest
whiz-bang-techno-geek-lovin feature, VoiceMail. No clue here
Never used one, don't know of anyone who has.
So, the question is: Has anyone used this or other MagicModems? Can they
be reccomended, are they garbage, do they do (glass) windows? Will they,
in effect, make me a happy modem camper?
Your insights on this and many other ponderations greatly appreciated!

Here are some thoughts, and a solution. First, DiskFit and Retrospect don't
synchronize, they back up. And two backups (one from each direction) are
not the same as a synchronization.
Many of the synching tools for the Mac work on non-powerbooks, so that
shouldn't be an issue.
**** Here's the part I have to disclaim, since I wrote this software: ****
I think FileRunner(tm) for the Mac fit your needs exactly. FileRunner is
designed to not only synchronize between 2 Macs - it will perform
*safe* synchronization between as many machines as you use. In your
scenerio, you would use FileRunner to synch your data to a floppy at your
home in the morning. Each "guest" machine that you walk up to is then
synched to the floppy, placing your data on the hard disk. After you are
done, you synch again and the latest stuff is copied down to the right place
on the floppy. FileRunner even has a command to clean all your data files
off of the guest hard disk for you (I thought it would be useful for students
using cluster machines)! Repeat the synching process for every guest
machine, and when you get home, synch all the updated data back onto your
hard disk.
It is important to note a few things: First, FileRunner is the only
synching application licensed to the USER, so it is perfectly legal to do
the above syching with one copy of FileRunner. Other synching products
would require you to buy a license for their product for every 2 machines
you wish to sych. Can you say "expensive"? I thought you could.
Also, other synching products claim to be able to synch more than two
machines. It is true, they can, but they don't do it safely. One part of
synching involves making sure the files haven't changed on more than one
machine (a version conflict). Only FileRunner detects these situations
properly when using a floppy or multiple machines (MacWeek got this wrong in
a recent article).
FileRunner also offers optional compression, so you can pack a lot on the
floppy. And tuneable log files. And a cool interface.
Finally, FileRunner is smart enough to sychronize deleted files, so, if
during the day you decide you are done with file and delete it, when you get
home FileRunner will offer to delete it for you there also. Other
applications would simply re-copy it onto the floppy.
In any case, hope it hasn't sounded too much like an ad. You can find out
about FileRunner by called MBS Technologies at 1 800 860-8700, NOT by
sending mail to me. You can also reach MBS by fax at +1 412 941 9076.
Email to MBS.TECH@applelink.apple.com will also work.
Rob
ps: Yes, I use FileRunner daily. Even to maintain its own source files.

Remember time shift when using connections to transfer (about 10MB),

You will need MPW, the shell only without compilers etc. will work.

My understanding is that it will be removed from the lists in October when
the new printers ship. It is still a very nice printer for the price, even
if it is being discontinued. Not too many Level 2 PostScript AppleTalk-based
printers (with parallel connection, autosensing, and HP PCL4 emulation) out
there for that price.

Subject: Problem with MacX and TCP/IP (R)
Summary of problem:Jens Eickhoff (EICKHOFF@dornier.de) writes that he can
use DECNET and MacX to connect to his VAX (software supplied with Pathworks)
but that using TCPIP and MacX to connect fails. The solution is documented
in the MacX/Pathworks somewhere, but this documentation is quite lengthy and
it is easy to miss. The problem is that a VAX running VMS does not trace
back the address of the calling system the way it does with DECNET. Here
is the solution.
First, make sure that MacTCP itself is working OK (you can telnet elsewhere,
you can get address from local nameserver, etc.). Suppose you want to
open a DEC Windows session on your Mac. In your home directory on the
VAX create a file which for clarity is called DECW_CREATE_SESSION.COM
This file should contain the following:
$ SET DISPLAY /CREATE /NODE=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx /TRANSPORT=TCPIP
$ SPAWN RUN SYS$SYSTEM:DECW$SESSION
$ EXIT
Here, xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the TCP/IP address of your Mac. Then, within
MacX, the command that you execute should be:
@DECW_CREATE_SESSION.COM
That's all there is to it. Also, be sure that you are using the MacTCP
Tool when configuring the connection to the host.

The QK extensions themselves seem to use less RAM. There si now a control
panel (Quickeys) and a Quickeys Toolbox installed. Quickeys Toolbox is always
running (it starts everytime you restart) and takes about 320K the way i have
it configured.
I still have'nt figured out if it takes less RAM in total.
I do have to say that the new interface is much nicer and the QK extensions a
lot more powerful. There are some conditionals ,jump and gosub extensions.
You did'nt ask but if you had, it is worth upgrading.
